Siren Bristol….

Siren Bristol – ” Never Ever has there been a more eclectic, inclusive, intergenerational, diverse, vibing, incredible, electric audience!”

By Miranda Rae – Station Manager/Presenter – Ujima Radio

From the moment you arrived at Siren Bristol you knew you were in for a great night, on entering the huge outdoor Amphitheatre space in the city centre of Bristol, you walk straight into Arena 2 promoting local artists and front and centre a huge Ujima Banner!

Ujima's CEO Faada Sojie at Siren Bristol 2023
Ujima’s CEO Faada Sojie at Siren Bristol 2023

For the 3rd year running organisers of Siren Bristol delivered an incredible event, this time lasting over 3 days and including a sell out performance with international superstar Sean Paul and a Hospitality Drum & Bass All Dayer on Saturday. Depending on your age and personal tastes you could argue which was the better day but kicking off with an incredibly clever and well thought out performance by Fabio & Grooverider and the Outlook Orchestra they covered 30 years of DnB from the conception of Jungle with classics like DJ SS and Lighter to Shy FX’s Original Nuttah, at which point had their been a roof on the Amphitheatre it would of been blown off.  It was incredible to see such a huge & diverse age range, literally from 18 to 80 years old and every single person in that crowd was a lover of the jungle and dnb vibes, be that an OG from the 90’s, Noughties or bang up to date, there was something for every body. Walking around the crowd it seemed like every single person knew the lyrics to every single song & the atmostphonere was electric!  And this was just night 1.

Roni Size

Massive kudos to Fabio & Grooverider who took time to acknowldge that jungle really did start in Bristol and Ujima’s very own Lawd Skrew could arguably be one of the main influencer’s & instigators. Mercury Prize winners: Roni Size, Krust, Die, Dynamite MC, Onallee & of course Ujima’s very own DJ SUV aka Reprazent were producing jungle to a standard never heard anywhere before and although the history books will tell you one story to the original crew, we all know it started in Bristol with reggae dub plates being mixed over techno tracks, but that’s a whole other story for another day…a personal highlight was seeing the 3 brothers who have had such a major influence on the Bristol music scene, again Lawd Skrew, The General and Roni Size, and I promise one day we will share that story with you (big love to Iva).

But for now the Ujima Family would like to say a huge thank you and congratulations to the Siren Bristol fam and especially Tom Hoyle and the Plaster Crew who went out of their to make us feel so welcome and support the Ujima cause! An incredibly well organised and delivered 3 day event that left the city buzzing and hoping that Siren Bristol will return for a 4th year…but will the continual city centre development allow for this, only time will tell.

Reverend Palmer & Peacemakers Patrol appealing to Parents and Grandparents to step up to the plate to save our young people’s lives.

Peacemakers Patrol make appeal!

Yet another young man stabbed to death in St.Pauls. These stabbings must STOP🫸We are appealing to Parents and Grandparents to step up to the plate to save our young people’s lives..IT could be YOUR CHILD OR GRANDCHILD, Nephew, Niece or Cousin NEXT!! Let’s get proactive meet on the Green in St. Pauls Tuesday 25th at 1pm (weather permitting) for a Patrols vigil for the lives lost through knives, and to say a firm 🚫⛔NO to knives on our streets…

By

Reverend Dawnecia Palmer – Chief Commissioner PEACEMAKERS Prayer and City Safety Patrols.🙏🏽

A vigil will be held in St Pauls this week to remember victims of knife crime, following a young man’s tragic death. The 19-year-old, who has not yet been named by police, has been described in the devastated community as a “lad who was very loved”.

He was from St Pauls and hundreds of tributes have been paid in his memory on social media, with many of his friends saying they cannot believe he is gone. Prayers were held at the Elim Church on Jamaica Street over the weekend, and there will be another opportunity tomorrow (Tuesday) to pay respects at the green in St Pauls*.

The teenager was found injured on Grosvenor Road just after 11pm on Friday night (July 21), but sadly could not be saved despite being taken to hospital. A post-mortem examination on Saturday confirmed the cause of death as knife wounds, according to Avon and Somerset Police.

Full police update on Sunday as murder investigation launched

A murder investigation has been launched by the force’s Major Crime Investigation Team, who have already eliminated one person from their enquiries – a teenager arrested near the scene on Friday night. He has been charged with an unrelated offence of possessing an offensive weapon.

Dawnecia Palmer, who has worked for decades to fight crime in the St Pauls community, spoke of her shock after the young man’s death. She runs the Peacemakers Prayer and City Safety patrols to help prevent violent crime, but said there had been less need recently as the situation seemed to have stabilised.

However, Rev palmer said: “Now this has shattered that bubble.” She has organised a vigil at the Green from 1pm tomorrow in St Pauls, weather permitting, saying: “These stabbings must stop.”

She said the vigil’s aim is to remember “lives lost through knives, and to say a firm no to knives on our streets.” She appealed to parents, grandparents, aunties and uncles to help raise awareness of the dangers of knives to “save our young people’s lives”.

Another member of the community in St Pauls told Bristol Live: “This was a lad who was very loved here, everybody knew him liked him. The whole community is in absolute shock, people are very upset, saying ‘no, not him’.”

Eastville councillor Lorraine Francis also paid tribute, tweeting on Saturday: “Awoke to hear that another youths life has been taken in St Paul’s. Sad times for the community and his loved ones. As a cllr and human being I send a heartfelt please for peace.”

Increased police patrols

A police spokesperson said yesterday: “There will be an increased police presence in St Pauls as the investigation continues. Our neighbourhood teams will be carrying out uniformed patrols as a contact point for the community.

“We’re still in the early stages of our enquiries and are exploring all avenues of investigation. We still need any information the community can give. You can contact us by calling 101 or through our website. Please give the reference 5223175298.

“Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers 100 per cent anonymously. You won’t be asked your name and cannot be traced whether you ring 0800 555 111 or use the anonymous online form.”

*An earlier version of this article incorrectly named College Green as the location of the vigil. The location is in fact the green in St Pauls and we wholeheartedly apologise for the confusion

Life Universecity LC Graduation Ceremony hosted by Reverend Palmer!

On Saturday 15th July the graduates of the Life Universecity LC and LU Life Church were honoured in a special celebration ceremony hosted by Reverend Palmer.

Life Universecity has been running the Transformation Life Courses with regular Monthly classes in the Old Fishponds Library, Fishponds, since 2016, and most recent years internationally via online Classes. This will be their 3rd graduation Ceremony. The first took place successfully in December of 2017 with the honorable attendance of then Lord Mayor Councilor Lesley Alexander. The second was with The Honorable Lord Mayor Cllr Cleo Lake. Their kind words and presence encouraged our students and their guests to believe in themselves and to aim for the best.

Fishponds is an area that is growing in innovations and entrepreneurial feats such as this amazing project, which was the first of its kind to Bristol.  Graduands, some for whom this is a life-transforming opportunity, to begin studies again in their later years, as well as for younger adults endeavoring to continue lifelong studies, earning through determination and hard work, a well-deserved Certificate of Attendance/Achievement.

As part of their Students Honoring Ceremony, they will be presenting extra awards to those that have contributed to help make our lovely city such a wonderful place to live and work. It is therefore an honor and joy to announce that Life Universecity LC 2023 Making Community Better Award goes to our very own Miranda Rae and Kevin Philemon. Miranda is Station Manager, Ujima Radio and community broadcasting. Kevin is BBC Radio Bristol Broadcast Journalist and founder of Ujima Radio known as ‘hardest working man in radio conversation.’ Additional LifeU Awards are: Prestigious Outstanding Leadership Award – to Avon & Somerset Constabulary Police Chief Constable Sarah Crew, LULC Community Peace Ambassador Award – to Julz Davies. And first ever, Youth Innovation Award! to Chioma Samuel, Age 10, published Author and PEACEMAKERS youth City Safety Patroller 2019 to present!

Ujima Radio are hugely proud to have to have 2 of our Ujima family honoured at this prestigious event!

Bristol’s St Pauls Carnival to be held every two years!

Organisers of the St Pauls Carnival have announced that the event will not return in full until 2025.

Former Ujima Radio Presenter and now BBC Journalist Dawn Limbu reports for BBC England:

This year, over 100,000 people celebrated the return of the first full carnival since before the pandemic.

Despite the success, organisers said they will have to scale back the event to one every two years.

It said this is due to funding challenges, with organisers having to raise over £250,000 to run the event.

Organisers said that next year will be marked with community led ‘Back-a-Yard’ gatherings – a traditional Jamaican phrase which means “back at home”.

The money to fund the carnival currently comes from grant funding from organisations such as the Arts Council and Bristol City Council, alongside money that the organisation has raised itself.

Latoyah McAllister-Jones, the executive director of St Paul’s Carnival, described it as the “jewel of Bristol’s crown” but said they have to be realistic to the cost.

“It’s the biggest cultural export that we have,” she said.

“I think it’s really important for the city of a whole to understand the true value of carnival. But we have to engage the true cost of it.”

She said the event sector and fundraising has “really suffered” since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The fundraising landscape has really shifted,” she said.

“There are lots of events that are struggling to happen.

“It’s just a very, very difficult and challenging landscape to raise funds to put events on, particularly for events that happen on the streets.”

The announcement has been met with disappointment among locals, with many reflecting on the cultural importance of the carnival.

Ashley Burrowes, owner of the catering business called Jerk King, is a regular caterer at the carnival and said the scale back will be “detrimental” for his business.

In addition, Mr Burrowes said cutting back on the carnival will affect local culture.

“This is the only day in the year that they [African and Caribbean people] can celebrate their culture,” he said.

“For them to take that away from the youths of Bristol, they’re gonna forget about their heritage.

“For me, it’s bigger than just money.”

Lawrence Hoo, a poet, educator and actor residing in Bristol, has urged the organisers to not give up on finding funds, due to the importance of cultural representation.

“The cultural impact is usually a very positive reputation of the African Caribbean community and culture, which often in the media is shown in a very negative light,” he said.

“It shines a light on the good aspect of the culture that the media can’t avoid.”

K*Ners, a musician from Bristol, has grown up attending the carnival since he was a child and said he is disappointed to hear it will be scaled back.

“Carnival is always a happy day. It’s a chance for people in the community to earn money selling things on their door step. It’s a way of the community to generate funds,” he said.
