Life Universecity LC Graduation Ceremony hosted by Reverend Palmer!

On Saturday 15th July the graduates of the Life Universecity LC and LU Life Church were honoured in a special celebration ceremony hosted by Reverend Palmer.

Life Universecity has been running the Transformation Life Courses with regular Monthly classes in the Old Fishponds Library, Fishponds, since 2016, and most recent years internationally via online Classes. This will be their 3rd graduation Ceremony. The first took place successfully in December of 2017 with the honorable attendance of then Lord Mayor Councilor Lesley Alexander. The second was with The Honorable Lord Mayor Cllr Cleo Lake. Their kind words and presence encouraged our students and their guests to believe in themselves and to aim for the best.

Fishponds is an area that is growing in innovations and entrepreneurial feats such as this amazing project, which was the first of its kind to Bristol.  Graduands, some for whom this is a life-transforming opportunity, to begin studies again in their later years, as well as for younger adults endeavoring to continue lifelong studies, earning through determination and hard work, a well-deserved Certificate of Attendance/Achievement.

As part of their Students Honoring Ceremony, they will be presenting extra awards to those that have contributed to help make our lovely city such a wonderful place to live and work. It is therefore an honor and joy to announce that Life Universecity LC 2023 Making Community Better Award goes to our very own Miranda Rae and Kevin Philemon. Miranda is Station Manager, Ujima Radio and community broadcasting. Kevin is BBC Radio Bristol Broadcast Journalist and founder of Ujima Radio known as ‘hardest working man in radio conversation.’ Additional LifeU Awards are: Prestigious Outstanding Leadership Award – to Avon & Somerset Constabulary Police Chief Constable Sarah Crew, LULC Community Peace Ambassador Award – to Julz Davies. And first ever, Youth Innovation Award! to Chioma Samuel, Age 10, published Author and PEACEMAKERS youth City Safety Patroller 2019 to present!

Bristol’s St Pauls Carnival to be held every two years!

Organisers of the St Pauls Carnival have announced that the event will not return in full until 2025.

Former Ujima Radio Presenter and now BBC Journalist Dawn Limbu reports for BBC England:

This year, over 100,000 people celebrated the return of the first full carnival since before the pandemic.

Despite the success, organisers said they will have to scale back the event to one every two years.

It said this is due to funding challenges, with organisers having to raise over £250,000 to run the event.

Organisers said that next year will be marked with community led ‘Back-a-Yard’ gatherings – a traditional Jamaican phrase which means “back at home”.

The money to fund the carnival currently comes from grant funding from organisations such as the Arts Council and Bristol City Council, alongside money that the organisation has raised itself.

Latoyah McAllister-Jones, the executive director of St Paul’s Carnival, described it as the “jewel of Bristol’s crown” but said they have to be realistic to the cost.

“It’s the biggest cultural export that we have,” she said.

“I think it’s really important for the city of a whole to understand the true value of carnival. But we have to engage the true cost of it.”

She said the event sector and fundraising has “really suffered” since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The fundraising landscape has really shifted,” she said.

“There are lots of events that are struggling to happen.

“It’s just a very, very difficult and challenging landscape to raise funds to put events on, particularly for events that happen on the streets.”

The announcement has been met with disappointment among locals, with many reflecting on the cultural importance of the carnival.

Ashley Burrowes, owner of the catering business called Jerk King, is a regular caterer at the carnival and said the scale back will be “detrimental” for his business.

In addition, Mr Burrowes said cutting back on the carnival will affect local culture.

“This is the only day in the year that they [African and Caribbean people] can celebrate their culture,” he said.

“For them to take that away from the youths of Bristol, they’re gonna forget about their heritage.

“For me, it’s bigger than just money.”

Lawrence Hoo, a poet, educator and actor residing in Bristol, has urged the organisers to not give up on finding funds, due to the importance of cultural representation.

“The cultural impact is usually a very positive reputation of the African Caribbean community and culture, which often in the media is shown in a very negative light,” he said.

“It shines a light on the good aspect of the culture that the media can’t avoid.”

K*Ners, a musician from Bristol, has grown up attending the carnival since he was a child and said he is disappointed to hear it will be scaled back.

“Carnival is always a happy day. It’s a chance for people in the community to earn money selling things on their door step. It’s a way of the community to generate funds,” he said.

Know the symptoms of cervical cancer!

Ujima Radio – NHS Takeover Show – Cervical Cancer Screening

Dr Glenda Beard joins Miranda Rae on Ujima Radio this Monday 17th July from 2-3pm to discuss and share information about Cervical Cancer Screening. Following on from the Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness week in June Doctors are calling for women and people with a cervix across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to attend a potentially life-saving cervical screening test.
As part of Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness campaign, doctors in the area want to remind people who have received a cervical screening invitation to book an appointment with their GP practice.

Dr Glenda Beard, GP and Clinical Lead for Cancer at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer as cervical screening identifies abnormal cells before they become cancerous. “Early detection really is the best form of defence. Sometimes people can feel embarrassed or unsure about having the test but GP practice nurses who do the cervical screening test will support you through what is a quick and simple procedure.“It is also important to be aware of the symptoms of cervical cancer, such as vaginal bleeding that is unusual for you, changes to vaginal discharge, pain or discomfort during sex or an unexplained persistent pain in your lower back or between your hips.

Please contact your GP for assessment and advice if you experience any of these symptoms.

More information about cervical screening is available on the Jo’s Trust website. https://www.jostrust.org.uk/

The legendary pioneer of Garage music, DJ Disciple comes to Bristol!

Roasted presents DJ Disciple (NYC) with residents. Deli-G and Ben Daley The Love Inn, Bristol on Sat 22nd July!

This week’s featured guest on The Word with Miranda is none other than the legendary DJ Disciple from New York ahead of his gig in Bristol at The Love Inn on Sat 22nd July. DJ Disciple is a DJ and house music producer from Brooklyn, New York & was massively influential in the rise of UK garage music. Stateside, he was considered a cornerstone of New York City’s house music scene.

Celebrating the release of his book, ‘The Beat, The Scene, The Sound’

‘A DJ’s Journey through the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of House Music in New York City.’

“The Beat, the Scene, the Sound” follows DJ Disciple and his behind-the-scenes account of how DJs, promoters, fans, and others from diverse communities transformed house music from a DIY project into an international sensation amidst the tumult of 1980s and 90s-era.

When house music first rose to prominence in the 1980s, it brought people together. But as DJ Disciple established himself in the scene, he witnessed it shatter. During the crack-cocaine epidemic, he literally dodged bullets bringing his records to and from clubs at night. The HIV/AIDS epidemic and homophobia threw up fear-based partitions. Then, mayors worked to close the clubs. House music was pushed underground and then abroad to the UK and Europe.

DJ Disciple is a Black artist, DJ, radio host, producer, and community advocate based in Brooklyn, New York. He has toured the world over a forty-year career. In 1987, he began working as a radio host. He gained a reputation for debuting music before its official release date. Among that music were the songs “Follow Me” (1992) by Aly-Us and “Beautiful People” (1994) by Barbara Tucker. His show was also unusual in that he played dance music by female DJs.

And this is just a taster of DJ Diciples incredible journey. Tune in this Friday between 4-6pm when he joins Miranda on The Word to find out more!

Roasted presents DJ Disciple (NYC) with residents. Deli-G and Ben Daley The Love Inn, Bristol on Sat 22nd July at The Love Inn, Stokes Croft, Bristol from 10pm to 4am.

Boomtown donate float to Ujima Radio for Procession 2023!

Boomtown Festival aka Boomtown Fair helped the biggest African & Caribbean organisation in Bristol to take part in the biggest African & Caribbean Carnival outside of London!

This year we wanted to make sure we supported St Paul’s Carnival in style and at the same time celebrate 15 years of broadcasting and thanks to Boomtown we did just that!

The amazing team at Boomtown including Kirsty, Rose and Prue faciliated loaning us an float unlike anything seen at the Carnival before. Artist and Sculptor Jason was commissioned by Boomtown to design a one off Art Car consisting of an old taxi once left in the fields of Wales in a state of disrepair, mounted on top of a vintage armoured military vehicle with a banging Sound System built especially for the mamouth vehicle.  Paul from DJ Kit Bristol ensured a banging sound system blew the crowds away when the Ujima family DJ’s kicked off.  After a nerve racking start the procession began with the legendary Bristol Crew & Ujima DJ’s, the Dancehall Generals, DJ Mega, DJ Johnny Bling and Selecta Duck kicked  with the unique blend of tunes.

We were greeted by 10’s of 1000’s of smiling, cheering faces shouting for Ujima.  The Ujima Family turned in style with Wordlife’s Krazy and crew including Kraay and Rising Son, Sharon Angela, DJ Propa Soul, Rev P and Peacemakers patrol, Mary in The Mirror, Jenny Whisounds, Becky, Holly and Miss Divine from the Rise Up Breakfast Show, Jaya, Skylion, Ursula, TJ, Jason from The Cause Bristol (coming soon to Ujima Radio), Grace, Mike from ALT REV, Joan, Lisa from Interculture with performances by Lorna Da Angel and then the epitome of carnival sounds and the crowd went crazy when The Super Soca Show guys took over.  Atki2, Dub Boy and Jonesy Wales blew the lid off the day with the perfect mix of Soca vibes.  Even when the procession ended the party continued with 1000’s of people following on behind the float continued to party. Just when you think the day can’t get any better Jonesy Wales dropped a track that no one else on the Globe had, an incredibly exclusive Soca track by General Levy and the crowd went wild! Krazy and his crew including Rising Son ended the proceedings with killer performance from Rising Son. We have to say a huge thank you to Nick & Bruce who did a superb job stewarding and keeping everyone safe along with the Boomtown team! Incredible Drone footage by Valentin Saiz captured the vibes and some great content and videos from everyone.  We cannot begin to thank everyone that turned out to support Ujima you know who you are!

We must say a huge thank you to our sponsors on the day including Oowee, Boomtown, DJ Kit Bristol and the Peacemakers Patrol.  As well as thank you to Ashanti Empress for the amazing Bomber Jackets and Bristol Clothing Pushers for ‘Ujimafying’ them!
